Les Arcs is a huge ski domain in the Tarentaise which links directly to the, equally huge, La Plagne domain via the Vanoise double-decker gondola. Combined, they form Paradiski, the second-largest linked ski area in the world, offering around 425km of groomed pistes.
Les Arcs itself boasts around 200km of runs, encompassing a great variety of terrain and offering something for all ability levels. Over 70% of the domain sits at above 2,000 metres altitude, guaranteeing great snow throughout the winter season and providing some spectacular long runs; the Aiguille Rouge peak at 3,226m gives breathtaking views of Mont Blanc and allows accomplished skiers and snowboarders to test their legs on a 7km run (with 2km of descent) down to the lowest (and smallest) resort, Villaroger.
There are five other purpose-built villages right on the slopes: Arc 2000 (the high one), Arc 1950 (the posh one), Arc 1800 (the big one), Arc 1600 (the first one) and Peisey-Vallandry at around 1,600m (the one that connects to La Plagne). Furthermore, the valley town of Bourg Saint Maurice provides access to Arc 1600 in less than 10 minutes via the Arc-en-Ciel funicular.
Les Arcs is open as a ski resort throughout the winter but is also very popular in the summertime when the lifts are repurposed for downhill mountain biking (MTB) and the area is otherwise filled with walkers, road cyclists, motorcyclists and other lovers of the great outdoors.
